THE MANE EVENT
WINTER HAIR CARE 101
During the cooler months, the chilly outdoor air and indoor heating that makes your skin dry and flakey isn’t much kinder to your tresses. Strands lose their sheen and become susceptible to splitting and breakage. To make sure your hair doesn't suffer on the cold front this winter, we asked top Sydney stylist, Leonard Newton, co-owner of the acclaimed Surry Hills salon Desmond and Molly Jones and the creative director of Evo, an Australian hair care line with amazing products, for his best hair care tips and advice on the essential products to equip yourself with.
Evo products were created from a desire to produce a high quality salon range that works wonders on your locks whilst being kind to the environment. All products are paraben, propylene glycol, sulphate, T.E.A and D.E.A free. Evo has also created a range of hairbrushes that are F.S.C approved!
Tip 1. Wash less and choose right
It's important to avoid shampooing hair every day because excessive scalp-scrubbing can cause it to become dryer and can even induce dandruff flakes over Winter. Like skin, hair conditions change over the seasons, so find the right EVO shampoo for your hair type and specific needs. “To nurture your locks these cooler months, try EVO MANE TAMER SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER and also think about using a dry shampoo spray such as EVO WATER KILLER for a quick fix giving great results to save on daily washing.” Lastly, remember the golden rule: never go outside with your hair wet or damp. Strands can freeze during an early commute, making it easier to break.
Tip 2. Forego the frizz
Cut back on heat styling by reducing blow-drying and the use of hot tools as there is already excess dryness in the hair from the cold air and internal heating. “When using hot styling tools such as curling or smoothing irons always prepare the hair with a heat protector like EVO ICON WELDER. It lets the heat from the tool do its job then sends the heat away. It's a bit like a deflector shield that will protect the hair. Also, get advice from your stylist as to what is the best styling product for your requirements, and ultimately find out how and where to apply the product to your hair. Ask them to show you a quickie technique at your next appointment.”
Tip 3: Deep condition
Pump up your conditioning to combat dryness and try using a leave-in conditioner to stagger the static factor from jumpers, wool coats and jackets and hats. Also try conditioning treatments weekly to help stimulate and promote blood circulation to the scalp, helping hair grow and create shine whilst boosting its strength. Put it on just washed hair and wrap you head in a towel or shower cap and leave it on for 20 minutes.
Tip 4. Pack it on
No, we’re not authorising a chocolate-induced feeding frenzy! We’re encouraging the use of serums and masks for your scalp and follicles to bring on a rush of hydration to frizzed, stressed-out strands as they penetrate deflated hair fibres. “Use a hair treatment at least once a week to feed the hair protein for strength and moisture. Think of it as food for your hair. A treatment penetrates inside strands promoting healthy hair that will perform for you as opposed to conditioner that concentrates on closing the outside of strands, resulting in shine and durability to the hair. LOCKDOWN is really clever as it it a leave in styling product and treatment that will control your hair improving shine and manageability. All you need is a 10c coin amount placed throughout your hair for frizz free happy hair.”
Tip 5. Get trimmed
Relax, it’s winter, have that second helping. We’re talking regular haircuts. “They are a necessity; ideally you would be looking at visiting your salon every six weeks to get pruned. If left too long, sometimes the condition of your ends is beyond repair, so prevent this from happening by getting that six week spot at your salon.” This also gives your hair the improved ability to grow without splitting.
