the grown up glittered eye

With a tan already warming your natural skin tone, it’s time add a little Midas touch with a grown-up glittered eye. Swap your usual brow bone highlighter for a gilded bronze and even consider a glitter lid. From rose gold to peacock shades, now, more then ever, there are eye products galore to kick-start your disco attitude.

Below is a step-by-step guide to creating a bountiful shimmer. If you’re after jewel-rich aura like emerald green, just use a shadow palette that complements the shade of your glitter and use the same principles below regarding where to use lighter and darker tones.

Shading the upper lid:

  1. Using your finger, apply a small amount of shadow primer to each of your eyelids. This will create a smooth palette for your shadow and make it last longer and crease less.

  2. Cover your lid with a medium-sized brush in a pale golden taupe shadow. Then, apply a slightly darker shade to color the outer corner of your eyes. This will help highlight them and make them appear more widely set.

  3. Using a narrower brush, apply a thin line of a darker brown shadow across the crease of your eyelid. This will help create the smoky effect. Remember, it is easier to add more shadow than to take it away. Start with less than you think you might need. You can always apply more.

  4. Lightly smudge each of the colors together so that they are appear blended and are no longer sharply defined.

The ultimate shimmery palette is By Terry’s Eye Designer Palette in Smoky Nude, with ten shimmery shades ranging from pearlescent pink to sultry smoke, so you can amp your lid shades up or down with multiple tonal options. It’s formulated to blend effortlessly and resist creasing and is far greater in value than most duo shadow compacts from covetable brands.

Creating your outline:

  1. Use either a sharpened brown pencil with a smudge application on the other end or a creamy metallic bronze eye shadow stick that delivers intense colour and light-catching pigment, for a more dramatic look at night.

  2. Draw a line from the inner corner corner of your eye lid towards the outside edge of you lid, gently flicking it upwards as you release the pressure. Ideally, just use a brown eye-liner on the lower lid starting directly under the pupil, out towards the outer edge of the eye, then smudge it gently to remove the sharpness of the outline. Creating the line from the inner eye can often make your eye look smaller.

By Terry’s Ombre Blackstar Crème Eyeshadow Pencil is a double-whammy tool: either apply the crème eyeshadow to your upper lid beneath the crease line and smudge it in, or define your upper lid outline with it like a eyeliner pencil.

The illuminati effect:

  1. Now it’s time to add your glitter. You don't want to end up with it dusting your cheeks, so hold a tissue beneath your eye with one hand, using your steadier one to control a liquid glitter eye shadow wand. This way, the sequin-like shine adheres to your lid via an invisible gel, locking in sparkle with minimal fallout.

  2. Gently dab it along the inner corner of your upper lid on an angled rising gradient towards your outer lid. When you reach the outer brow bone, dot the wand tip in the space between the lash end of your lid and the outline you have created. For intense sparkle, let the liquid dry and re-coat. You can even dab (and smudge) the wand along your lower lid liner for a more intense glow.

  3. Lastly, apply mascara to the outer wings of your lashes to really open your eyes up and outwards.

HOW TO Tips:

  • Have tissues nearby to help you clean up any stray glitter off your cheeks;

  • Make sure that you have a gentle eye-makeup remover handy in case you need to remove the shadow and start over;

  • If applying a glitter powder with a brush, use one with short, compact bristles to dot along you lid and keep your star dust in place by first applying a waterproof primer to fix your fluttering eyes;

  • Glitter can be tenacious and virtually impossible to remove with cleanser alone. The professional trick is to press a piece of sticky tape under your eyes and cheeks to lift off any stray sparkles.
